St. Michael's and Sts. Cyril & Methodius Churches are open for Masses. You are not required to wear a mask; however, you are strongly encouraged to wear one especially if you have not been vaccinated.
Ash Wednesday is February 22nd, and Lent continues through Good Friday, April 7th. Both Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Abstinence from meat is obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year. Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. According to the U.S. bishops, fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year.
Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Through works of fasting, prayer and abstinence, we heed the Prophet Joel's exhortation to "return to God with our whole heart" (2:12). Lent is a penitential season and practices such as daily Mass, reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, works of charity and justice and acts of self-denial are highly encouraged. He speaks to us through His Son, Jesus Christ, the Word-made-flesh. Prayer, at any point in our life, is our response to God who is already speaking or, better yet, revealing Himself to us. Therefore, prayer is not merely an exchange of words, but it engages the whole person in a relationship with God the Father, through the Son, and in the Holy Spirit. (USCCB)
